Green Key and Blue Flag are sustainability programs run by the international environmental education organisation FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). Green Activities is a sustainability program developed based on chapters 1-3 and 11 of Green Key with the permission of FEE, and available only in Finland.
The use of Green Key, Green Activities and Blue Flag certificates in Finland is overseen by Going Green Ltd, which is a certified social enterprise. Program and audit fees are spent on running the programs, and profits are used for supporting the environmental education activities of FEE Finland.
The board members of Going Green Oy are Riitta Salasto (chair), Henna Junttila and Helena Lieto-Pihlajaoja.
Going Green Oy has been granted the “Social enterprise” mark by the Association for Finnish Work. The mark can be held by companies that have been set up to solve social and environmental problems and dedicate most of their profits to this purpose. Transparency and openness of activities are crucial. In its articles of association or rules, the company must have defined its social objective and the way it spends the profits.

External auditors
In line with Green Key’s international audit regulations, Going Green uses external, independent auditors. All our external auditors have extensive tourism field experience and expertise on developing sustainable tourism.
The Green Key Jury
Based on the application and audit reports, the Green Key/Green Activities certificate is granted by the Green Key/Green Activities jury. The jury consists of sustainable tourism experts and representatives of different stakeholder groups. Membership in the jury is a voluntary, unpaid commission of trust. Usually, the jury convenes once every 2 months.
The Blue Flag Jury
In Finland, the Blue Flag is awarded by the national Blue Flag jury based on applications. The jury members are specialized in aquatic environment, health and safety and are representatives of responsible tourism interest groups. Membership of the jury is a position of trust for which no separate compensation is paid. The Blue Flag jury gets together once a year.
Once the national jury has approved the Blue Flag application, it is further discussed in a meeting of the international jury.
Notification of a criteria deviation
Green Key, Green Activities and Blue Flag require certified companies to comply at all times with the imperative criteria presented on this website. Compliance is checked in connection with annual renewal applications and regular audits. Unfortunately, however, we cannot monitor our certified sites on a daily basis, so the observations of tourists and company staff are very important to us.
Please use the form below to notify us if you encounter activities, procedures or attitudes at our certified sites that do not meet the criteria. If possible, please include a detailed description of the incident and photos/other evidence in your report.
Please remember that the reporting channel is intended only for situations where a company does not comply with the imperative criteria of our certificates – other complaints regarding operations should be addressed directly to the company, or, if necessary, to another supervisory authority.
We process all reports with confidence, and you do not need to provide your contact information. However, if you wish to be informed about the progress of your notification, please give us your email address.
